Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an advanced and targeted treatment for individuals suffering from trauma and PTSD, as well as a variety of other issues including depression, phobias, anxiety, stress, disturbing memories, and sexual or physical abuse. It is a highly specialised treatment that can only be provided by an accredited specialist. Max von Sabler is trained to provide EMDR.
EMDR has comparable effects to other treatments for trauma and can often affect change quickly and sustainably. The treatment focuses on traumatic memories and follows the view that traumatic memories are often ‘frozen in time’. In this way, remembering trauma can often be as bad as experiencing it. This is because the images, sounds, smells and feelings have not changed since they first occurred. These memories can have a lasting effect.
EMDR targets the neurological brain processes involved in trauma and stimulates a reprocessing of the event such that the individual no longer relieves the trauma. While they can still recall the event, it is no longer upsetting or disturbing.
